The work surface and the frame are different things
A desk can be available with a genuine solid-wood work surface while using a metal frame, motor or other mechanism. Each should be stated separately.
Solid wood versus laminate or engineered board
Solid wood is heavier and shows its grain, colour variation and joins. Laminate and engineered board are lighter and give a flat, uniform surface. Neither is automatically right; budget, weight, finish and the size you need all matter.
Real wood changes with use
Every piece is unique, and the surface may develop minor marks or changes in appearance over time. That is the material behaving normally rather than a fault. Read how to care for it.
When solid wood is worth choosing
Choose it when the desk is a visible piece of furniture in the room, when you want natural grain rather than a printed surface, or when you need a size, thickness or edge a mass-produced top does not offer.
Ask what is included
A clear quote should name the tabletop material and thickness, the edge and finish, the frame or legs, cable openings and accessories. Wood-look and solid wood are not the same thing, so it is worth asking which you are being offered.
